The Walking School Bus will be making it's first trek out starting on Monday, August 31st. It's super easy to participate, and is part of the Winfield School District #34 Wellness Initiative. CLICK this link for signup forms.
What is a Walking School Bus?
A walking school bus is a group of children walking to school with two or more adults. If that sounds simple, it is, and that’s part of the beauty of the walking school bus. It can be as informal as two families taking turns walking their children to school to as structured as a route with meeting points, a timetable and a regularly rotated schedule of trained volunteers.
Why does Winfield School District have a formal Walking School Bus?
In 2013, our District was awarded a Safe Routes to School grant to purchase necessary materials to initiate this wellness project. We believe in promoting habits that positively impact children’s physical and emotional well-being. Walking to school with peers in the safety of parent volunteers is an excellent way to start the school day. http://www.saferoutesinfo.org/
Who is leading this project?
Our District’s Wellness Committee composed of teachers, administrators, and parents, in partnership with the PTO is spear heading this project.
What do we need from our Winfield Families?
Volunteers !!!
· Coordinators – to coordinate the schedule of parent ‘drivers’
· ‘Drivers’ – parents who will lead the walk to school.
What are the responsibilities of the parent drivers?
They would walk with the students on a pre-determined route to school and pick up students along the route at designated stops.
How often?
With a large pool of parent volunteers, we anticipate that a parent would be responsible for one day of walking for the whole week.
· August, September, and November of 2015
· April and May of 2016
How do we know which children to pick up?
Students who are participating will register for the walking school bus and will carry a simple identification tag on their back pack.
Will I be alone?
No, we are planning on having two or more parent drivers each day.
Will I receive any training?
Yes, all parent volunteers will receive safety training.
If you are interested in volunteering, please contact: Suzy Pereckas at [email protected].
